"It was your smile that brightened my darkest days. It was your song that gave my heart wings. It was your light that shined and guided my heart into your arms and gave my life shape and meaning."
I looked at the words I had come across in a card I must have sent you, jotted down over a year ago from some vaguely remembered song. In those times we often sent each other little notes or cards that we found in some shop or other. Just words on paper but words that seemed to tell each other how we felt. Though we both tried to find such words when talking to each other on our endless telephone calls, these little gifts seemed to say so much more.
The days when we were apart seemed endless and the feeling of being half not whole left and emptiness that only you could fill. Each stolen moment we had together was worth more than any jackpot in the lottery of life. The happiness of receiving and email from you, the expectation of a planned phone call, receiving a letter, written in a hand my heart knew so very well. There were days of darkness when the only light at the end of the tunnel was the knowledge that you were there, and that somewhere in our future, the star we were aiming for would be there in our grasp. Like a shining beacon in night's darkness, that goal was there, the plan, the meaning for our continued existence or dream.
Your song drowned out the shrill screech of reality, the painful cry of the being apart drowned by the chorus of your love. You were there, and I hoped I was for you, tears unseen shed away from prying eyes, the pure helplessness of where our lives had positioned us up until this moment.
Thoughts of those days still my me shudder, wondering how either of us got through them, but we did. Your song guided me through each sharp curve of what fate had in store for us, carefully picking our way through the obstacles that life always seemed to throw in our direction.
Then came the final stretch, the winning post in sight, and the knowledge that your welcoming arms would be there for me, a greater prize than any contest or medal could produce.
Always, there was your song. It still gives me the strength to face each day, and now covers the lifes of our own children with your caring and love.
"It was your smile that brightened my darkest days. It was your song that gave my heart wings. It was your light that shined and guided my heart into your arms and gave my life shape and meaning."
